The Journey of Patience

“But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”- Romans‬ ‭8:25

Don’t we just love to wait? Don’t we just love to be stuck in traffic? Don’t we just love to see the buffering sign on our phones, Netflix/Hulu, and internet? Obviously the answer, is no. We live in a “right now” generation where we are used to getting everything right away and culture tells us we deserve it. That we’ve always earned it. We want this job. We want this relationship. We want this house. We want this car. If we don’t have the patience to be committed into getting the wants then we will end up failing by the impatience of our heart and soul.

Look at Abram, soon to be called Abraham, in the first book of Genesis. He and Sarai, later known as Sarah, was childless. They wanted a child. Abraham wanted an offspring in his family. Thankfully, God chose him and said to him that He will bless Abram with being a father of a great nation (Genesis‬ ‭12:1-3‬). Please remember, when God calls you, the call will have patience as well. Abram was excited but his excitement started fading for he was being impatient. Later in Genesis 12 and Genesis 16, Abram impatience got the best of him. He lied to people in Egypt and had a baby not with Sarai but with her maid. When you become impatient, you are satisfying the thirst of your sin than your salvation.

I know most people say the opposite of faith is fear. Which I agree, but I would go a step further and say the opposite of faith is being impatient. When we don’t have the faith of our calling, we get impatient. When we don’t have the faith of our calling, we get fearful. When we don’t have the faith of our calling, we sin. We do have a chance to overcome the impatience in our lives. We have a wonderful, merciful God. His mercies are anew every morning. (Lamentations 3:23) We can pray and repent, just like Abram, to receive the full blessings that God called us at the beginning. Pray for patience so God’s calling in your life can be apparent to you and be shown to others.
